Why the body matters in children’s mental health

Introduction

When a child struggles with their mental health, adults often ask questions like these: Why won’t they go to school? Why can’t they control their emotions? Why aren’t they using the coping strategies they’ve been taught? Why aren’t they more resilient?

Although these questions seem reasonable, they all have something in common. They assume the problem lies mainly in the child’s thoughts, choices or motivation. But what if we have been looking in the wrong place?

Modern neuroscience increasingly shows that thinking is only one of the brain’s many jobs. Before we can concentrate, solve problems or regulate our emotions, our brains are continuously performing countless other tasks that rarely enter our awareness. They regulate breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, hormone release, immune activity, movement, sleep, digestion, and our responses to the world around us.

These processes are fundamental to our mental wellbeing. Together, they allow the brain and body to maintain stability while continually adapting to an ever-changing world. They provide the biological foundation for mental wellbeing. 

The illusion that mind and body are separate

For centuries, Western culture has often treated the mind and body as though they were separate. We speak of “mental health” as though it exists independently from physical health. Schools measure learning separately from wellbeing. Healthcare is frequently divided into physical services and mental health services. We talk about thoughts, emotions and behaviours as though they arise independently of the body that produces them.

Modern science tells a different story.

Every thought you have arises from a living organ that depends on oxygen, nutrients, sleep, hormones, immune signalling and a constantly changing balance of activity throughout the body.

Emotions are not simply ideas. They are embodied experiences. Anxiety changes breathing, muscle tension and heart rate. Fear prepares the body to respond to danger. Joy alters posture, facial expression and movement. Grief can feel physically painful.

Rather than existing separately from the body, our thoughts and emotions arise from the brain’s activity and its constant interaction with the rest of the body. 

This does not reduce mental wellbeing to biology alone. Our relationships, experiences, thoughts and environments all matter profoundly. The point is that they are not separate from biology; they shape, and are shaped by, the way our brains and bodies function together. 

Adaptation is a whole-body process

Every day, our brains and bodies work together to help us adapt. We adjust to changing light, temperature and sound. We interpret conversations, make decisions, learn new information, cope with uncertainty, regulate our emotions, and move between environments and social situations.

Most of this happens automatically. The remarkable thing is not that adaptation occurs, but that it appears so effortless most of the time.

Although adaptation often seems effortless, it is anything but for the brain and body. Every act of adaptation requires biological work. The nervous system changes its activity, hormones fluctuate, muscles prepare for action, the cardiovascular system adjusts, the immune system communicates with the brain, and energy is constantly being allocated to meet the demands of the moment.

Most of this biological work is healthy and adaptive, happening without us noticing. Problems tend to arise when demands remain high for long periods and opportunities for recovery are insufficient.

Thinking is only the visible tip of a much larger biological process. 

When the body is working harder than we realise

Most of us have experienced days when concentrating feels unusually difficult. Perhaps we slept badly, are coming down with an infection, or are simply exhausted after several stressful weeks.

We rarely blame ourselves for thinking less clearly under those circumstances. Instead, we intuitively recognise that our bodies affect how our minds function.

Yet when children struggle over weeks or months, we often forget this connection. We begin to assume that difficulties with attention, emotional regulation, motivation or school attendance reflect something wrong with the child’s thoughts or behaviour, rather than asking what demands their brain and body have been trying to meet.

What if the child’s brain and body have simply been working extraordinarily hard for a very long time? Not because they are ill in the traditional sense. Not because they lack resilience. But because the demands placed upon them have consistently exceeded the opportunities available to recover.

This matters because the way we explain children’s difficulties influences the way we respond to them. If we assume the problem lies mainly in behaviour, thoughts or motivation, we naturally design behavioural or psychological solutions. If we recognise that the brain and body are already working close to their limits, we may begin to ask different questions about demands, recovery and support. 

What happens when we focus only on behaviour?

When we see only behaviour, our solutions naturally target behaviour. If a child does not attend school, we focus on attendance. If they become emotionally overwhelmed, we teach emotional regulation strategies. If they appear unmotivated, we encourage them to put in more effort.

Sometimes these approaches help. Sometimes they do not.

When they fail, it may be because we are trying to improve performance without understanding the biological state that enables it.

No amount of encouragement can eliminate profound exhaustion. No behaviour chart can replace restorative sleep. No reward system can provide the recovery that an overwhelmed brain and body require. 

Behaviour matters. But behaviour is often the visible expression of invisible biological processes.

If children’s brains and bodies are being asked to adapt more often, to more complex environments, and with fewer opportunities to recover, it is plausible that an increasing number will begin to struggle. 

If adaptation requires biological work, then it follows that biology also requires the time and conditions in which that work can be completed. 

Recovery is not a luxury

One consequence of separating mind from body is that recovery can begin to look optional. Rest becomes something children earn once they have completed their responsibilities. Breaks become interruptions to productivity. Sleep is sacrificed for homework or activities. Downtime is filled with structured enrichment. Even adults often celebrate being busy while feeling permanently exhausted.

However, recovery is not the opposite of progress. Recovery is one of the processes that make progress possible.

Muscles strengthen during recovery after exercise. The body recovers after illness. Sleep helps consolidate learning and supports memory, emotional regulation and physical repair.

Living systems maintain themselves through continual cycles of challenge and recovery. Humans are no exception.

A different way of seeing children

This perspective changes the questions we ask.

Instead of asking, “Why isn’t this child coping?”, we might ask, “How much work is this child’s brain and body doing simply to get through the day?”

Instead of asking, “How do we increase resilience?”, we might ask, “Have we protected opportunities for recovery?”

Instead of asking, “Why has this child stopped attending school?”, we might ask, “What has made school exceed this child’s current capacity to adapt?”

These questions do not lower expectations. They recognise that sustainable progress depends on understanding how living systems function.

Bringing mind and body back together 

Perhaps the most important shift is not philosophical but scientific. The more we learn about the brain, the immune system, hormones, sleep, metabolism and the nervous system, the harder it becomes to separate mental wellbeing from physical functioning.

The child who cannot think clearly after months of overwhelm is not experiencing a purely mental problem. The child whose anxiety affects their stomach, appetite or sleep is not experiencing a purely physical problem.

Both may reflect the consequences of a brain and body that have been working hard to adapt for too long.  

Research across neuroscience, physiology and psychology increasingly shows that thoughts, emotions and physical functioning are deeply interconnected. The challenge now is ensuring that our homes, schools and healthcare systems reflect that understanding. 

If we want to understand why an increasing number of children are struggling, we may need to stop asking what is wrong with their minds and start asking how their brains and bodies respond to the world around them. 

Mental health is not something the brain produces in isolation. It emerges from the continuous interaction between the brain, the body and the world around us. If we overlook any one of these, our understanding of children’s mental health will always be incomplete.
