Introduction
Resilience is one of those words that almost everyone uses, but few people define. Children are encouraged to become more resilient. Schools are praised for building resilience. Parents are told that resilience will help children cope with life’s challenges.
The intention is usually positive. Life inevitably brings stress, uncertainty and change, and helping children develop the skills to navigate these experiences is important.
However, resilience is often misunderstood – or worse, weaponised. Too often, it becomes shorthand for asking children to continue tolerating environments that overwhelm them. The message can become: “Keep going.” “Push through.” “You’ll get used to it.”
When viewed this way, resilience starts to look remarkably similar to endurance.
But resilience and endurance are not the same thing.
Life requires constant adaptation
Every day, our brains and bodies adapt to the world around us. From the moment we wake up, we continually adjust to changes in our environment and respond to new experiences.
We adapt to changes in light, sound and temperature. We process conversations and emotions. We learn new information, solve problems, cope with uncertainty and move between activities. Even everyday disappointments require us to adjust our thoughts, emotions and behaviour.
Most of this adaptation happens automatically and without us noticing. It is not something unusual or exceptional. It is one of the defining characteristics of life.
Without the ability to adapt, we could not learn, grow or survive.
Adaptation has a cost
Across biology, healthy systems depend on cycles of challenge followed by recovery. Muscles become stronger when periods of training are followed by recovery. New skills develop through practice followed by sleep, when memories are consolidated. The brain and body are continually shaped not simply by exposure to challenge, but by what happens afterwards.
Although much of this adaptation happens automatically, it is never completely free. Every act of adaptation requires biological work. The brain and body continually regulate internal systems, coordinate physiological responses, and process new information in order to maintain stability while responding to changing demands.
Normally, this cost is small. Biological systems have evolved to cope with these everyday demands. They adapt, then rest and recover, before adapting again.
It is this continual cycle of adaptation and recovery that allows us to cope with the changing demands of everyday life while maintaining our health and wellbeing.
Stress increases the demands of adaptation
Stress is an essential part of this picture. Whenever we encounter a challenge, uncertainty or threat, the brain and body respond by increasing their efforts to adapt. Sometimes this adaptation is brief. Sometimes it continues for weeks, months or even years.
The greater the stress, the greater the demands placed on the systems responsible for adapting and maintaining stability.
Although these principles apply to everyone, some children must perform far more adaptive work than others to participate in everyday life. For many autistic children, these demands are unusually high. Daily life may require continual adaptation to:
- sensory environments
- social expectations
- masking or camouflaging autistic differences
- executive functioning demands
- unpredictable routines and transitions.
These demands are not occasional. They may be present throughout much of the day, requiring the brain and body to work continuously simply to engage in everyday life.
Recovery is what makes resilience possible
This is the part of resilience that is often overlooked. Adaptation to challenge alone does not build resilience. The continual cycle of adaptation followed by recovery plays an essential role in the development of resilience over time.
Challenge is not the enemy of resilience. Rather, resilience depends on challenge being balanced by sufficient opportunities for recovery.
Living systems continually repair, replenish and reorganise themselves between periods of challenge. Recovery helps restore the capacity needed for future adaptation. Burnout may develop when the cumulative biological cost of continual adaptation repeatedly exceeds the opportunities available for recovery over time.
Recovery is not the opposite of adaptation. During recovery, the brain and body continue to carry out active biological processes, including replenishing energy stores, regulating physiological systems and consolidating memories. Recovery is therefore an active biological state rather than simply the absence of challenge. It is also an essential part of the adaptive cycle. Healthy brains and bodies continually adapt, recover and adapt again.
Whether an activity is an opportunity for recovery is not defined by what a child is doing. It is defined by whether the demands placed on their brain and body have been reduced sufficiently for restoration to occur. Two children may both be walking in nature or reading a book. For one child, the experience may be restorative. For another, it may still require considerable adaptation. Recovery therefore depends not on the activity itself, but on whether its demands are sufficiently reduced – or appropriately matched to current capacity – for restoration to occur.
When recovery is insufficient, the balance begins to shift. The cumulative cost of adaptation starts to exceed the body’s capacity to recover. Over time, adaptation gives way to exhaustion.
Without recovery, resilience cannot be maintained. Without recovery, resilience gives way to endurance. And endurance, however admirable it may seem, eventually breaks down.
Autistic burnout through the lens of resilience
Although the ideas explored in this article apply broadly, they may be particularly relevant to autistic children, whose everyday lives often require substantially greater adaptive work to navigate environments that are not designed with their needs in mind.
This perspective offers a different way of understanding autistic burnout. Burnout is widely recognised as the result of prolonged or overwhelming stress, and this remains an important part of our understanding.
Burnout may occur when the cumulative biological cost of continual adaptation repeatedly exceeds the opportunities available for recovery. This perspective helps explain why burnout develops gradually over months or even years, yet may appear to occur suddenly when a child finally reaches the point where they can no longer continue. It also helps explain why recovery often takes much longer than people expect.
From this perspective, a child does not stop coping because they lack resilience. They stop coping because even the most resilient biological systems have limits when recovery is insufficient. No adaptive system can continue to function indefinitely if the demands placed on it consistently exceed its capacity to recover.
Removing the source of chronic stress is an essential first step. However, reducing stress does not instantly restore the brain and body’s capacity to adapt. Just as healing from a physical injury takes time, recovering the capacity to adapt to daily life is often a gradual process that requires safety, rest and repeated opportunities for recovery.
Rethinking resilience
Perhaps resilience should not be measured by how much stress a child can tolerate.
Instead, it may be more helpful to think about resilience as the ability to adapt to life’s challenges while having sufficient opportunities to recover.
From this perspective, resilience is supported when children can adapt without becoming overwhelmed, when they have opportunities to recover between periods of challenge, and when their environment reduces unnecessary demands rather than continually increasing them. It is strengthened by relationships that promote feelings of safety and by having enough time and support to return to a stable baseline after difficult experiences.
When these conditions are in place, resilience is likely to develop naturally. Not because the child has learned to endure greater levels of stress or suffering, but because their brain and body have had the opportunity to complete the full cycle of adaptation and recovery and have gained valuable learning from the experience.
This shifts the focus away from asking children to become more resilient in increasingly demanding environments. Instead, it encourages us to create the conditions in which resilience can emerge: environments that balance challenge with recovery, support adaptation without overwhelming the child, and recognise that rest is not the opposite of progress – it is one of the biological processes that make progress possible.
A healthier understanding of resilience
A healthier understanding of resilience recognises that it is not created by exposing children to ever-greater demands. It develops when challenge is balanced with recovery, when environments reduce unnecessary stress, and when children have enough time, safety and support to restore the capacity needed for continued adaptation.
Rather than asking how much stress a child can tolerate, perhaps we should ask whether they have enough opportunity to recover.
Recovery is not separate from resilience. Together with adaptation, it forms the biological cycle that makes resilience possible.

Perhaps improving children’s mental health begins with a simple shift in perspective. Instead of asking how children can adapt to increasingly demanding environments, we might ask how those environments can better support children’s capacity to adapt, recover and thrive.
